Clam the Wham and Min the Pin
This charming story of a girl who goes to get clams for her mom, illustrated by Beatrice Powell, also known as "mom" was written and illustrated in 1983.
Beatrice Powell (1934-2021) moved to the shores of Penn Cove, on Whidbey Island, Washington in 1971 where she and her husband raised 3 children; Caleb, Sarah (the piano teacher behind Piano Key Finders, among other things) and Min.
Min, the youngest, was 10 at the time Beatrice wrote and illustrated Clam the Wham.
In addition to be an artist who was educated in New York City during the 1950s and '60s, Beatrice was fluent in Mandarin Chinese. The art in this book reflects the influence of her years spent studying Chinese brushwork.
The house and beach, illustrated on page one, still remain. Clams are still shooting arches of water on the tidelands.
