Chords aren't normally played by themselves in a piece of music. They are played in combination with other chords.

Tonic root position - dominant first inversion (I-V)
Tonic root position - sub-dominant second inversion (I -IV)
Tonic root position - dominant 7th first inversion (I - V7)
Tonic root position - minor 6th first inversion (I - vi)
Tonic root position - minor 3rd second inversion (I - iii)
Sub-dominant second inversion - minor 6th first inversion (IV - vi)
