Mode-rn Scales

Do you have any idea about how difficult it is to write about the different modes and make it sound fun, edgy, and exciting? I've been struggling so I took a detour and looked up movie and book titles with musical puns. How are these?

  • A Picture of Dorian Gray's Anatomy of a Jazz Band

  • Bass-ic Instinct

  • The Silence of the Jams

  • The Empire Strikes Bach

  • Lord of the Strings

  • Aeolians

  • The Girl with the Dragon Trombone

  • The Fault in our Sharps

  • Lord of the Strings

Ok, so they're pretty terrible.

If you are interested in playing modes, and understanding how they are created. You are in the right place. I've been using the 2-octave major scale card and the Modes on one page.pdf (see below).

Having the scale degrees shown on the scale card makes it really easy to play a major scale with a flat 3rd and a flat 7th on the piano. Sliding the card around makes transposing a breeze.

Imagine being able to play or teach the F sharp dorian scale, and have a student play it accurately on the first or second attempt!

Pianos are great for visualizing the pitch. Flats are one key to the left, and sharps are one key to the right. For dorian, the flat 3rd and the flat 7th are one key to the left of the 3 and the 7 on the card, which are both black keys in the case of C dorian.

Teach one concept, slide the card and repeat. What's not to love?!
